Documents You Need to Rent a Motorcycle in Thailand
Thai motorcycle rental law is strict on the books and inconsistent in practice. Here's what we require at Adventure Bikes Pattaya, and why.
**1. Valid motorcycle driving licence from your home country** Must be current. Must include the correct category for the engine size you're renting (most countries split at 125cc / 400cc / 650cc+).
**2. International Driving Permit (IDP) endorsed for motorcycles** Issued by your national motoring authority (AA in UK, AAA in US, similar elsewhere). Must be the 1949 or 1968 version depending on your country. Always carry it with your home licence.
Without an IDP, your travel insurance will likely refuse to pay a claim.
**3. Passport** We check it at pickup and keep a copy on file for the rental term. We do not hold the original.
**4. Deposit (refundable)** Held during the rental period. Returned in full at drop-off assuming no damage beyond normal wear.
**What we don't need** - Your passport original - Your credit card held at the shop - A co-signer
**What happens without proper documentation** We'll politely decline. We'd rather lose a rental than put a rider in a position where their insurance doesn't cover them after an incident. It's our job to protect you as well as the bikes.
